Captions, Subtitles & Language Detection is TAG’s comprehensive solution for assuring text-based accessibility and localization quality at scale. The system continuously monitors caption and subtitle tracks to confirm they are present, valid, and match the expected language.

Beyond technical checks, TAG applies advanced algorithms to automatically detect the language of each subtitle track. Using language-specific analysis, the platform validates accuracy and assigns a quality score. These insights- including identified language and quality percentage – are displayed directly within the multiviewer, giving operators immediate visibility without adding external tools.

This automation eliminates the need for manual review across hundreds of channels and languages, reducing operational overhead while ensuring accessibility compliance. Broadcasters and content providers gain confidence that every audience receives correct, synchronized, and reliable captions and subtitles.

Technical Overview

For Closed Captions, TAG supports both EIA-608 (analog) and EIA-708 (digital) standards, as well as OTT captions. The platform probes each service in real time to detect missing channels, frozen updates, or parity errors across all caption groups. Dedicated event logic identifies when captions are absent (Closed Captions Missing), not updating (Closed Captions Not Updated), or producing decode/parity errors (Closed Captions Parse Error).

From version 6.3.1 onward, TAG also monitors cross-standard consistency between EIA-608 and EIA-708 streams, triggering mismatch alerts (CC-1 to CC-4 608/708 Mismatch) whenever analog and digital caption data diverge. OTT environments are monitored similarly, generating events when captions are missing or frozen in manifested streams. This ensures consistent delivery and compliance across linear, IP, and adaptive bitrate workflows.

For Subtitles, TAG validates DVB, Teletext, OP-42/47, and hybrid delivery formats. It detects missing PIDs (Subtitle Missing), zero bitrate conditions, PTS/PCR misalignment (Subtitle PES Drop), decoding and positioning errors (Subtitle Content Error), and teletext parsing failures (Tele-Sub Error). Additional checks confirm proper subtitle identifiers (0x20), prevent out-of-frame rendering, and detect empty subtitle streams that persist beyond configured thresholds.

Advanced metadata analysis identifies language inconsistencies and ranking errors, raising alerts when the detected subtitle or caption language differs from stream descriptors or when the matching percentage drops below a defined threshold.

Together, these capabilities give engineers and operators a comprehensive compliance and quality framework.
